I grew up in Winnipeg. When I was very little the house we lived in was off the beaten path. There was a single lane dirt road to the property & there were only 3 houses surrounded by fields of natural grasses & wildflowers. With no other buildings, it was like our own little world. We lived in a tiny little house & our property was very much like Little House on the Prairie.
In the winter we would get snowbanks as high as the roof of the house because there was nothing to break the wind from blowing the snow around. It was great to play on, but it was cold so I always looked forward to spring. When the snow would finally melt the grass would shoot up really fast & get tall. The first flowers of spring were always crocus. The beautiful pale lavender blossoms would peep through the grass shoots. I would lay back in the grass, surrounded by these beautiful flowers, looking up at the endless blue sky.

The Crocus always provides a little hope that sunny skies and warm air are close. No to mention they’re beautiful!

It’s nice how the same flowers indicate spring half way across the globe.

I would have thought it was not possible. When my daughter moved to North Carolina from Wpg. she had terrible allergies for a couple years because of the different types of plants from home. Even moving from Wpg. to NW Ont. & then to AB, we ran into lots of different types of plants.

I Googled them. They originated in Europe. I suppose settlers imported them.
My boys had a similar problem when we emigrated from SA to the UK. Not with allergies, but with being exposed to new germs. They were constantly sick in the first year.
Allergies are worse, I think, because at least the boys did eventually acquire immunity.

I lived in Weyburn, Saskatchewan for five years as a child. We had a double-wide trailer out in the middle of nowhere. I remember cold, cold weather, lots of snow, and in the spring, lots and lots of mud. But I loved when we went to Winnipeg. We’d eat at the Old Spaghetti Factory. Loved it!

I thought crocus was the last word a frog says before it dies…

It’s the last word a “group” of frogs say. If it was a singular frog it would be croci or crocme.

Aw…we always had crocus (croci????) growing up and they bring back nice memories. Sure sign that spring is coming even if they are dusted with a bit of snow!

It would be nice if spring came earlier in the year.
I love seeing the first crocuses peek out of the ground.
